Julio Cruz - Tuba

New York native Julio Cruz currently serves as tubist of the Nautilus Brass Quintet from Boston, Massachusetts. He has performed throughout the east coast, northern California, as well as internationally in Italy and France, playing concerts at venues such as the John C. Borden Auditorium in Manhattan, Long Island's Tilles Center, Friedberg Hall in Baltimore, the Bank Atlantic Center in South Florida, and La Chiesa San Domenico in Alba, Italy. Mr. Cruz has had the opportunity to perform under the batons of Maestros Michael Tilson Thomas, Marin Alsop, and Alasdair Neale. Ensembles with which Julio has performed have included the New World Symphony, the Manhattan School of Music Symphony, the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, the Chesapeake Orchestra, and the Long Island and Chesapeake Youth Orchestras. He has also performed with jazz artist Dave Douglas, under the baton of Mark Gould, at New York's Festival of New Trumpet Music and has performed with the Orchestra Miami for Andrea Bocelli's Christmas Concert tour. Mr. Cruz has participated in the Alba International Music Festival in Piedmont, Italy and was a participant in the Institute for Performance Success Summer Seminar in Phoenix, Arizona as well as the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar in Boston, Massachusetts.

Along with his colleagues in the Nautilus Brass Quintet, Julio currently serves as artist in residence as well as applied faculty member at San Jose State University’s Summer in the City music program. They were the ensemble in residence at the University of Connecticut as part of the Richards Chamber Music Fellowship Artist Certificate program, performed in many recitals throughout New England and have presented clinics to various music programs including the Windham, CT school district and the 7th Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. NBQ has served as chamber music coaches and have helped in establishing a chamber music program at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs, CT.

Julio's principal teachers have included Toby Hanks, former Tubist of the New York City Ballet Orchestra and New York Brass Quintet, and Ken Amis, Tubist of the renowned Empire Brass Quintet. Additional studies and coachings from Patrick Sheridan, Samuel Pilafian, members of the Atlantic and Triton Brass Quintets, Tommy Johnson, Center City Brass Quintet, Øystein Baadsvik, John Stevens, John Faieta, David Finlayson, Chris Olka, Dan Satterwhite, Marc Reese, Steve Campbell, Tom Smith, The Meridian Arts Ensemble, Jim Olin, David Fetter, John Cradler, Joseph Burnam and Daryl Smith.

Most recently Mr. Cruz received a Professional Performer's Certificate from the University of Connecticut, under the tutelage of Dr. Louis Hanzlik of the Atlantic Brass Quintet and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.  He completed his Master of Music degree at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music, received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music and has also done undergraduate work at Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland.

As an educator, Julio maintains a private studio, as well as serving as a marching and music instructor with the Lindenhurst High School Marching Band on Long Island and is on the brass staffs for the 7th Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from New London, Connecticut and Sunrisers Drum and Bugle Corps from Long Island, New York.
